Martha Rehkamp
Martha is a ceramic artist living in Minneapolis, MN. She creates clay sculptures that marry her background in fine arts, a passion for gardening, and a love of experimentation.
She began working in ceramics in 2015 at the Northern Clay Center where she continues to enjoy a studio. In 2022 she completed the post graduate certification from the Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education offered at Northern Clay Center. Her work in clay was preceded by a lifetime of working in and around the arts, after having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of St. Benedict and a BS in Art Education from the University of Minnesota. She is a member of the American Craft Council and was a featured artist in the contemporary craft showcase CraftForms 23.
After her early college years as a fine arts major and working as a painter and art consultant, she moved into marriage, motherhood, and business entrepreneurship. She shifted from being a maker of art to creative partnerships in the architectural and interior design community. Now she finds herself restarting her art practice again. Life is about rediscoveries and new discovery.
Her years of gardening prove that ideas grow in fertile soil. There is no age limitation, and the late stages of a garden, as in life, are just as beautiful as the early ones. She looks at life through the lens of her garden, celebrating all stages and cycles of life. Her recent sculptures depict the beauty inherent in fading garden forms. Her artistic journey has led her to discover that clay is the perfect medium with which to mimic nature in all its seasons.
