Ky McDonald

The paintings of Ky McDonald depict unoccupied spaces that intersect beauty and isolation.  Ky’s painterly aesthetic manages to express a fresh curiosity and drama that draws a viewer into her ambiguous interiors.   The works capture a sense of anticipation that ignites the energy of a space during an absence of social experiences, and the emotions that it carries in the shadows.

Ky disrupts the realist quality of her work with obscure, painterly renderings of indoor/outdoor spaces inspired by mid-century post and beam structures.  The integration of sparse architecture within the compositions collides with the invasive sunlight and thriving plant life within the spaces, bringing life to the shadows that dance throughout the composition.   Her use of empty chairs and dining tables serve as lifeless tableaus; a metaphor for togetherness and divisiveness.  Ky balances the moody sense of anticipation with a colorful hopefulness that shines through her dramatic spaces.
